Thanks for the web site Mark. I own the only Lak in N.Texas as far
as far as I know. I fly out of T.S.A. and have logged over 200 hours
in the last year. Short field landings???? Well, you have already made some
interesting decisions to get into any situation requireing a S.F.L, But weather
and terrain do vary.... be that as it may I would fly the final at 100 kps (no sig. wind)
full flaps, gear (need I say) aim directly for the entry boundary, fence, wire or whatever.
with as shallow an approach as you can handle. Allow the ground effect of the massive wings to flare you.
Now comes the tricky part... apply wheel break while holding increasing back pressure no the stick, to keep the nose from digging in!!
You can break really hard with practice. point As you slow and the tail drops evaluate your situation do you have enough room? If not when necessary plant a wing and ground loop, gently,
Choice- use full wheel brake and keep the tail off the ground, or keep your nose clean and drag the tail.. I think I would drag the tail under 20 kps??
I hope this has been helpful, with good planning and a little luck a Lak pilot should never find themselves in that situation. Boy am I asking for IT

I would appreciate informations about maintenance of these ships. Thanks a lot! JosИ

I am a happy owner of a Lak 12 since one year and found that, the dirrection control is to poor, specialy
on the ground at the begining of the take off and at landing at the end of rolling out ( not to mention with tail wind ).
I increased the ruder by one inch, with very good results on the ground as in the air. Hope this information
can help other Lak owners.

Hi Mark,
Congratulations for this web-site. It`s good to know, that
there`s someone who took trouble over making this nice site.
And it`s good to know too, that glider producing and constructing
in Lithuania still exists, and they have a new FAI-15m class glider
as LAK-17.
Otherwise me and my family, we have two gliders, a PIK-20D,
and a Cobra-15, both of them very nice, but after this site
I look forward to try a new LAK-17.

Have owned LAK 12 in England for 3 years, having brought it back ourselves, refurbished, from Lithuania. If you get one try and get one with the light trailer! The more usual trailer really big and heavy. It really is a wonderful aircraft and if, like me, you were moving up from Junior, Astir, ASW19 etc, the performance will blow your mind. If you have never flown bigwings with flaps before, get some practice in appropriate two seater first! I did, which was useful and will help you understand how to get it back on the ground!

Ive never flown gliders before, but I just happened to wonder on to this web page of Van Sants. Im in Hickory, NC now, but I learned to fly at Collegeville, PA back in high school. I worked for Paul Gingrich,(while I was still in high school), in Spring City, PA over hauling Jacobs radials. Mr Van Sant and Paul used to swap out parts. Paul had the engine parts, and the Van Sants had the airframe parts for the C-195s. I always enjoyed flying up to there to see everyone, and talk to Mr & Mrs Van Sant. Lots of stories. We picked up a Stinson 108-1 up there one day, and I flew it back with a flat cylinder. On another day, I flew Pauls C-195 up there to pick up some parts. The 195 had a cross-wind gear on it, and as I swung the day downwind to run the engine up, a lady in a C182 pulled up infront of me, shut her engine down, and waved be to shut down. I invited her inside, and asked whats the matter, and she said I cant take off, my wheels were all bent! After swinging the tail around with the cross wind gear, the wheels were pointed at about 10 oclock and 2 oclock, so I guess it did look rather silly. But I expalined to her what a cross-wind gear was and she appologized. And we were off. I fly up to PA every so often in our C-140 or PA28-180, so Ill plan to stop in the next trip up there. I havent been there since 1970. Good luck to all, and Id really like a Yak-52!

After five years I am getting back into soaring but I only have 120 hrs, do have my private, gold alt. and Silver distance. Most of my hrs. are mostly single place in SGS 1-26,1-23,2-33,2-32,Blanik,Schleicher K-8B,IAR IS-28B
Rated ok for aerobatics by my original instructor in all but the Is-28B. I have flown ridge, thermal, convergance and wave to 15,000. After that wave flight I had to land in a 50 mph 90 degree crosswind or land at the Navys Moffet field. Went back to Sky Sailing and landed okay but I cheated. I landed into the wind playing altitude, speed and spoilers against the fence and position. I rolled about 70 ft and flew on the ground until the 1-26 was grabbed by people that got there too late to catch the wave before the crosswind was strong enough to forbid takeoff. I had left at 0800 and was at 15,000 20 minutes later and had the sky to myself except for the airliners. What a way to get your first real wave flight. My question is after getting up to speed with some dual in a Is-28B is there any reasons I should NOT buy a Lak-12 for flying for flyings sake.I learned to fly at Sky Sailing when Les Arnold ran the place and it was his airplanes I learned in. Derek Piggott stated that the Lak is a fine handling sailplane so can a low time pilot with good climbing skills and hopefully good judgment with a burning desire to learn soaring fly this airplane safely? I am also looking at a Kestrel, I can only buy a glider once so I want as much airplane as I can safely fly.
